1st International PIWI Symposium

A day dedicated to sustainable grape varieties

On June 22, 2023 WINZER KREMS organized in cooperation with the International PIWI Association the 1st International PIWI Symposium in Krems. This took place on the campus of the Krems University of Applied Sciences and brought together renowned experts from the wine industry to discuss the latest developments and marketing opportunities of fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWI). The aim of the symposium was to draw public attention to the importance of sustainable PIWI varieties for the future of viticulture. The morning focused on breeding, cultivation and vinification of PIWI grape varieties, while in the afternoon their marketing potential was discussed in panel sessions. The crowning finish was a gala dinner by star chef Thomas Dorfer of Landhaus Bacher in the Kloster Und in Krems, which was accompanied exclusively by PIWI wines. These were presented by the winemakers themselves as well as by Annemarie Foidl, President of the Sommelier Union Austria and the Sommelier of Landhaus Bacher, Katharina Gnigler.
